Liquid-Tight Flexible Metal Conduit
Liquid Tight Flexible Metal Conduit is similar in appearance to its close relative, Liquid Tight Non-Metallic Flexible Conduit. Both have a smooth grey jacket and do not leak fluid. The liquid-tight flexible non-metallic conduit has an internal steel shield which makes it stronger and less likely to kink. Either of these raceways can be created in gentle curves to change instructions and avoid challenges. In addition, the versatility is suitable for ending up at motors that may have violent vibrations.
Liquid-Tight Flexible Metal Conduit can be used in exposed or concealed locations where adaptability or protection from liquids, vapours or solids is required. Use in designated unsafe (classified) locations is permitted, as well as for direct burial, and is detailed and marked for this purpose.
Impermeable flexible metal conduit must not be used in the event of physical damage.
There are some size restrictions. Liquid-tight flexible metal conduit of sizes smaller than statistical designation 16 (trade size 1/2) is not to be used. However, an exemption allows metric code 12 (trade size 3/8) to be used to enclose motor leads. The optimum size for liquid-tight flexible metal conduit is metric code 103 (trade size 4).
The optimum number of bends should be no more than four quarter bends between tension factors. With exceptions, liquid-tight, adaptable steel conduit should be securely fastened in a 12 in. box and protected for a period of no more than 4 1/2 ft.
If liquid-tight flexible metal conduit is used to minimise resonance or to provide flexibility for repositioning tools, an equipment grounding conductor must be provided. Otherwise, an internal metal jacket will certainly suffice.
Liquid-tight flexible metal conduit is a durable alternative wiring method. Where appropriate, it contributes to an attractive appearance in commercial and business work and also works well in domestic environments to power pumps and fixtures that have ambient humidity in addition to resonance.
Use of Liquid Tight Flexible Metal Conduit
1.Humid environments
Waterproof conduit and fittings are specifically designed to prevent wires and cables from coming into contact with liquids or moisture. Wet, damp or humid environments where wiring is required are ideal places to use Liquid Tight Conduit.
Key examples include car washes, water management facilities and food and beverage processing plants where equipment must be flushed regularly. Liquid-tight conduits not only ensure the safety of the public and employees, but when used correctly can also extend the life of cables and prevent electrical failures.
2.Dusty environments
Dirt, dust and other tiny particles can cause equipment short circuits and malfunctions. Liquid-tight flexible metal conduits are used in agricultural operations, textile mills, wood/pulp/paper mills, etc. to prevent the penetration of dirt and particles.
3.Corrosive environments
Liquid-tight conduits are also the best choice for frequent exposure to corrosive environments. This conduit not only protects against moisture, but also effectively seals out hazardous substances that could damage wires and cables. This is very beneficial for many chemical facilities and other applications where corrosive substances are likely to be produced.
4.Various external applications
Any electrical equipment that is exposed to the outside world can lead to potential problems. UV light and other outdoor elements can lead to breakage and other types of damage. The use of impervious flexible metal conduit protects cables and wires from sunlight, extreme temperatures, humidity and other outdoor elements, thus extending their life and preventing damage.
